A Glimpse of Ireland
I hope you will enjoy my paintings of the folklore and culture of early 20th Century Ireland.
Some are drawn from my memories; others as described by my elders or sketched at live traditional music sessions in Áras Chrónáin – The Irish Cultural Centre – located almost in the shadow of probably Ireland’s finest round tower at Clondalkin, Dublin.
– Maurice (Muiris) O’Connor
D’fhás an t-ealaíontóir, Muiris Ó Conchubhair aníos i Sráid Parnell, Cathair Phort Láirge. Rinne sé oiliúint i Scoil Ealaíne Bardasach Phort Láirge ón áit a ndearna an Irish Sugar Company cuardach air mar dhearthóir agus ina dhiaidh sin ina eagarthóir bainistíochta ar an tréimhseachán ‘Biatas’: an iris Beet Grower. Bhunaigh sé mar shaor-dhearthóir grafach – ceann de na dearaí is fearr aithne air ná saothar ealaíne torthaí agus glasraí geal ar an gcéad bhus maisithe CIE.
Ina dhiaidh sin rith Muiris agus a bhean chéile Claire, ‘Maurice O’Connor Designs’ a bhí mar saincheadúnas Éireannach (?) Marler Haley freisin, ag soláthar ábhair taispeána, comharthaíochta agus seastáin taispeántais.
Mar ealaíontóir, is fearr le Maurice uiscedhath agus is breá léi a bheith ag péinteáil cairde agus teaghlaigh i radhairc a léiríonn a ghrá don cheol agus an spraoi ‘ceol agus craic’.
I measc a chuid cártaí beannachta tá beannachtaí i mBéarla chomh maith le Gaeilge a chara.
About the Artist
Maurice (Muiris) O’Connor
An Ealaíontóir
The artist, Maurice (Muiris) O’Connor grew up in Parnell Street, Waterford City. He trained at the Waterford Municipal School of Art from where he was head-hunted by The Irish Sugar Company as designer and subsequently managing editor of the periodical ‘Biatas’: the Beet Grower magazine. He set up as a freelance graphic designer – one of his better known designs was bright fruit and vegetable artwork on the very first decorated CIE bus.
Maurice and his late wife Claire subsequently ran ‘Maurice O’Connor Designs’ which was also the Irish franchise of Marler Haley, supplying display materials, signage and exhibition stands.
As an artist, Maurice favours watercolour and enjoys painting friends and family in scenes reflecting his love of music and fun ‘ceol agus craic’.
